TAIPEI (ICIS news)--State-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC) plans to expand its refinery in Panipat, Haryana state, from 12m tonnes/year to 15m tonnes/year by 2008, a company official said on Thursday.

The expansion would provide more feedstock for the facility's aromatics unit, said Avinash Verma, chief manager of petrochemicals marketing at IOC, speaking on the sidelines of the two-day Asia Petrochemicals Industry Conference (APIC) in Taipei.

Currently, the Panipat complex comprises a 357,000 tonne/year paraxylene (PX) unit, a 21,000 tonne/year benzene plant and a 553,000 tonne/year purified terephathalic acid (PTA) unit.

The PTA unit is currently running at 90% capacity but could reach 100% operating rates "anytime", said Verma.

IOC also planned to expand its PTA unit to 700,000 tonnes/year production, he said, but did not specify a timeframe.

The company would focus only on PTA production and did not plan to move further downstream, though it was working with a partner that was investing in polyester exports to Pakistan, where a very good market existed, he said.
