TAIPEI (ICIS news)--Thailand's consumption of major polymers is expected to grow only slightly this year due to appreciation of the baht and the European Union imposing anti-dumping tariffs on Thai plastic bags, an industry association said on Thursday.

The country's consumption of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS) /expanded PS (EPS) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene/styrene acrylonitrile (ABS/SAN) will rise slightly in 2007, Thailand's Petrochemicals Industry Club said in a report released at the Asia Petrochemical Industry Conference (APIC).

In 2006, polymer consumption growth was already affected by negative factors such as nation-wide floods, which hampered local construction, and the baht appreciation, which reduced the export volume of finished goods, it added.

In 2007, low density polyethylene (LDPE) consumption is expected to grow by 2.4%, while linear LDPE (LLDPE) is forecast to grow by almost 7%.

High density PE (HDPE) consumption is expected to grow by 3%, the association said.

It further estimated that consumption of polypropylene (PP) will grow by 6% this year while usage of PVC is expected to increase by 4%.

Demand for PS/EPS is forecast to grow by 5% this year while ABS/SAN consumption will rise by 5%, it said.

Thailand's Petrochemicals Industry Club is made up of local producers such as PTT, IRPC, Siam Cement and Thai ABS.
