LONDON (ICIS news)--Basell’s low density polyethylene (LDPE) production at Fos in the south of France was down on Friday due to cracker problems, a company source reported.

Details of the cracker problems were unclear. There are two crackers at the French chemicals complex. Basell operates a 450,000 tonne/year cracker at Berre, and Total Petrochemicals and INEOS Olefins jointly run a 740,000 tonne/year unit at Lavera.

An incident at Arkema's vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) unit nearby earlier this week brought down the Lavera cracker early ahead of a shutdown which was due to start at the end of the month, company sources said.

Basell has two 55,000 tonne/year autoclave LDPE units at the site. Both were out of action on Friday and it was not clear when they would restart.

LDPE prices have increased by €20-30/tonne ($27-41/tonne) in May and PE producers have made it clear that they would be seeking further hikes in June.
