SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Formosa Petrochemical Corp (FPC) has started up its newest No 3 cracker successfully this morning as scheduled and on spec material is expected in the next 48 hours, a company source confirmed on Friday.

“We confirmed that our No 3 cracker was started up on Friday morning after naphtha was fed into the unit,” the company source said. “On-spec material is expected over the weekend.”

The new cracker, which will be Asia’s largest, will require 3.6m tonnes/year naphtha, traders said. The cracker will produce 1.2m tonnes/year ethylene and around 600,000 tonnes/year propylene.

The cracker project was initially scheduled to start up at end-2006, but was delayed to the second quarter of this year due to labour shortage and problems with securing construction materials.

An olefins conversion unit, producing 250,000 tonnes/year propylene, and a 176,000 tonne/year butadiene unit were also due to start up with the cracker.
