MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (ICIS news)--Non-residential construction has offset some of the slowdown in the US housing market, an economist said on Friday.
Mark Vittner of Wachovia said that public spending has been robust, particularly for healthcare and educational facilities.
The construction market is an important downstream consumer of such chemicals and chemical products as paint and plastic.
Non-residential construction during the first quarter rose by 10% from the same time last year, according to the US Department of Commerce.
Vittner was speaking at the Southeast Chemical Conference (SECC), which began on Thursday and ends on Saturday.
