NICE (ICIS news)--The heavy use of soda ash in everyday products underscores the need for producers to protect the public and the planet, an industry association said on Wednesday.
Speaking on behalf of the Europe Soda Ash Producers Association (ESAPA), chairman John Kerrigan urged the industry to face the challenge of greening the planet.
Producers need to make sure they are not compromising the planet through dated production methods, and work with downstream consumers to insist that everyday products are not harmful to the environment, Kerrigan told delegates at the World Soda Ash Conference.
“There are so many products that depend on soda ash from the detergents we use to clean our clothes with, the food we eat, the medicine we take and the glass windows that provide us shelter,” Kerrigan said.
Soda ash producers make both light soda ash and dense soda ash, which serve different purposes according to their granular properties.
Light soda ash is a white free-flowing product with very fine granules, suited for use in detergent and chemical applications.
Dense soda ash, in contrast, has been developed to meet the requirements of glass makers with the granular properties allowing it to be dust free and reduce the risk of segregation.
