LONDON (ICIS news)--Gulf Advanced Chemical Industries (GACIC) will shut down its 75,000 tonne/year butanediol (BDO) plant at Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia, for a turnaround in August a source confirmed on Tuesday.

The plant had originally been scheduled for routine maintenance turnaround in June, but this was postponed due to high demand in the market.

Players thought that the shutdown would have little impact on the European market in the third quarter, as the plant only provided an estimated 2,000-3,000 tonnes/month to Europe.

Third-quarter BDO negotiations are at an early stage, with buyers and sellers divided over the possibility of a decrease for the first time in 19 months.

Second-quarter BDO contracts were assessed up €50-60/tonne ($37-45/tonne) at €1,820-2,000/tonne FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe) according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.

Major Europe BDO producers include BASF, ISP and Lyondell.
