LONDON (ICIS news)--Oleon has formed a joint venture with Diester to refine crude glycerine produced as a by-product from Diester’s biodiesel site at Compiegne in northern France, the oleochemicals group said on Thursday.
Oleon said the companies would build a 30,000 tonne/year glycerine refining unit scheduled to come on-stream in 2008 or 2009.
It would provide an outlet for around 10% of Diester’s annual crude glycerine capacity.
The enormous growth of the European biodiesel industry has created a glut of crude glycerine in recent years creating a need for extra refining capacity.
Oleon said the availability of crude glycerine would double between 2005 and 2010.
