SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Singapore’s national standards body on Friday launched a new set of guidelines on the storage of flammable and combustible liquid chemicals to ensure better workplace safety.

The newly-published SS 532 code of practice is an update of an older set of best practices called SS CP 40, and will provide companies and owners of flammable storage facilities a more comprehensive set of guidelines for the safe storage of flammable liquids, said SPRING Singapore.

The new edition also aligns with local regulatory authorities, various other standards and the UN’s global harmonised system (GHS), a standard for classifying chemicals according to the hazards they present.

SS 532 is used as part of safety measures by more than 90 petroleum, petrochemical, specialty chemical and supporting companies on Singapore’s Jurong Island. Together, they have more than Singapore dollar (S$) 27bn ($17.5bn) of fixed assets investment on the island.

The chemical cluster in Singapore is a major industry with an output of S$76.2bn in 2006, about 32.5% of total manufacturing output of $234.6bn.
