HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Global consumption of polypropylene (PP) is expected to grow by strong rates and reach 51m tonnes by 2010, a market publisher said on Friday.

The Asia-Pacific region represents the largest market for PP, expected to consume 16.8m tonnes in 2007, followed by Europe and the United States, said Global Industry Analysts in its “Polypropylene: A Global Strategic Business Report.”

Collectively the three regions are estimated to account for more than three-fourths of the global consumption of PP, the report said.

The Asia-Pacific region is also projected to be the fastest growing market, followed by South America, according to the report.

Injection moulding depicts the largest and the fastest growing end-use segment, with a compounded annual growth rate of 6.4%. Extrusion end-use industry represents the second largest application of PP, followed by blow-moulding industries, the publisher said.

Large numbers of PP plants are recording 100% capacity utilisation rates, with their entire stocks being sold out, said Global Industry Analysts.

The PP industry is witnessing emergence of new companies, and the change of ownership of existing participants. Most of the newcomers are privately owned companies headquartered in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia.
