NEW DELHI (ICIS news)--India’s Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) said on Monday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dow Europe for business co-operation in the realm of chlorinated organics.

GACL said the two companies would explore “a long-term and strategic business relationship in the area of chlorinated organics based on the inherent strength of both the companies.”

Dow Europe, a member of the US company Dow Chemical (DCC), operates a network of research laboratories and plants across the Europe.

DCC is expanding its operations in India. Dow Chemical Singapore’s Indian subsidiary Dow Chemical International Pvt. Ltd (DCIPL) is setting up a R&D centre near Pune in Maharashtra.

DCIPL handles the marketing of Dow Products in India.

It also operates the technical centre for Polyurethanes in Mumbai. DCC group also operates a pesticides subsidiary Dow AgroSciences India Pvt. Limited.

DCC has been hesitant in making an investment in a petrochemical complex due to the legacy of 1984 Bhopal gas disaster that it inherited by acquisition of Union Carbide.

It wants its name to cleared from the ongoing litigation relating to clean-up of the Union Carbide plant at Bhopal from where methyl isocynate (MIC) gas leaked on 3 December 1984, resulting in the death and injury of thousands.

GACL operates two manufacturing complexes at Dahej and Vadadora in Gujarat state. At both sites it operates chlor-alkali units and several downstream plants.
