HOUSTON (ICIS news)--United Nations (UN) director general Jacques Diouf for Food and Agriculture (FAO) plans a visit to Brazilian biodiesel sites on Sunday, according to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry on Friday.

The visit to the semi-arid Iraquara region of the northeast state of Bahia will orient Diouf on the social development programme to produce and use biodiesel there.

Diouf’s fourth visit to Brazil from 6-9 July coincides with the Third National Conference on Food Security.

According to some critics in the region such as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the commercial production of biofuels leads to land grabbing and threatens the food supply by driving up prices.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has stated that biofuels production is compatible with social development goals, including the security of the food supply.
