SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Mitsui Chemicals is to invest about yen (Y) 19bn ($154m) to double its alpha-olefin copolymer capacity in Singapore, it said on Monday.

The Japanese major will build a 100,000 tonne/year unit on Jurong Island and the expansion will accelerate growth of its automotives and industrial materials which were central to its performance materials business, it said in a statement.

Construction will start in March next year and the new capacity will come on stream in August 2009, it added.

Wholly owned subsidiary Mitsui Elastomers Singapore will operate the plant and sell the product.

The alpha-olefin copolymer is used in automotive, industrial and packaging materials.
