Malaysia govt urged to develop glycerine industry

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--The Malaysia Oleochemical Manufacturers Group (MOMG) has asked the government for incentives and grants to companies to encourage the development of new uses and applications for glycerine, a key by-product of biodiesel.

This was because the strong growth in the biodiesel industry locally and worldwide will raise the price of crude palm oil and lower the price of glycerine, it said in a memorandum at an annual dialogue held by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) late on Monday.

"For every 10 tonnes of oil processed into biodiesel, one tonne of glycerine comes out as a by-product," MOMG said, adding that Malaysia alone is processing applications for 4m tonnes of biodiesel.

If all the new biodiesel plants being planned worldwide come onstream, global production of glycerine will easily double over the next two years from the current 1m tonnes, it said.
