LONDON (ICIS news)--Degussa has started up its new 40,000 tonne/year polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) moulding compounds plant in Taichung, Taiwan, the German specialty chemicals major said on Thursday.

The facility was built in a 51:49 joint venture with Taiwan optical electronics manufacturer Forhouse Corporation. It makes products for optical applications in flat panel displays.

“Global demand for our high-quality PMMA moulding compounds is set to rise significantly in the next few years,” said president of Degussa’s methacrylates business unit Gregor Hetzke.

“The market for liquid-crystal flat-panel displays is currently expanding at an annual rate of more than 10%,” he added.

Apart from PMMA manufacture, the further processing of lighting modules for flat-panel displays would also be located at this site.

Degussa is a subsidiary of German state-owned conglomerate RAG, which on Wednesday took a step closer to floating the specialty chemicals maker on the stock exchange.
