HOUSTON (ICIS news)--DSM will showcase automobile parts made from its plastics at the international trade fair for plastics and rubber K2007, the company said on Wednesday.

The eight-day trade show begins 24 October at Dusseldorf, Germany.

DSM said that with wider application of plastic components, car manufacturers can reduce both the weight and cost of their automobiles.

Switching from metal to DSM’s Stanyl PA46 can lead to cost reductions of up to 35% and weight reductions of up to 80% in metal-rubber applications such as engine mounts, top mounts and exhaust mounts, the company said.

Replacing aluminium with Arnite PET for the throttle valve body in electronic throttle controls can result in cost/part reductions of 75% and a 60% weight reduction while preventing icing, increasing design freedom and improving fuel efficiency, according to DSM.

Akulon Ultraflow PA6, approved for air-bag containers, is suited for metal replacement projects because the material has good flow characteristics, high productivity, excellent surface appearance and short moulding cycles, DSM said.

Other automotive applications for Akulon Ultraflow, said DSM, include structural reinforcements, oil sumps and pans, pneumatic valve housings and automotive seat adjuster parts.
