SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Formosa Petrochemicals Corp (FPCC), Asia’s largest cracker operator, has ramped up its No 1 naphtha cracker operating rate and has no immediate plans to shut the unit completely despite a compressor problem, a company source said on Friday.

The company raised operating rates to 97-98% this week, up from 80% last week.

“It appears to be a minor problem and we can bear with it and keep our plant running. We have no plans to shut it down just yet,” the source said, adding that the company hoped to achieve 100% operating rate over the weekend.

The Mailiao cracker, east coast of Taiwan, and the company’s smallest unit, was running at 80% rate last week due to compressor problem and there was an initial plan to shut down the unit this week if the problem persisted.

FPCC’s No 2 900,000 tonne/year cracker at Mailiao is scheduled for maintenance on 3 September.
