SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Farsa Petrochemical is to start up its 400,000 tonne/year monoethylene glycol (MEG) plant “by the end of the year or very early next year”, a source close to the company said on Thursday.

“Because of the lack of [feedstock] ethylene, the start-up date has been pushed back to around the end of the year, or very early next year in January,” said the source.

The plant, which would also produce 40,000 tonnes/year of diethylene glycol (DEG), was supposed to have started up this month.

The project was initiated by Iran’s state-owned National Petrochemical Co, before being transferred to become wholly managed by Farsa, a privately-owned company in 2004.

The MEG plant is downstream of the Olefins No 10 project managed by Jam Petrochemical, whose 1.32m tonne/year cracker is expected to start commercial operations in December.

Other facilities downstream of the cracker include a high density polyethylene (HDPE) unit, a HDPE/linear low density PE (LLDPE) unit and a polypropylene (PP) unit each with a capacity of  300,000 tonnes/year.
