EXECUTIVE BRIEFING

DETLEF THIELGEN

has been appointed chief financial officer (CFO) at Belgian biotechnology and pharmanceutical group UCB from September 1. He will replace Luc Missorten who will leave to pursue other opportunities. Since January 1 this year, Thielgen has served as CEO of UCB's Schwarz Pharma, having served there as CFO since 2002. Roch Doliveux, UCB's CEO, said, "His in-depth knowledge of Schwarz Pharma and extensive experience of the pharma industry will make a major contribution."

JO LENNARTZ

will become the new director of technology at Akzo Nobel. Bob Margevich, currently general manager of Akzo Nobel Polymer Chemicals, will succeed Jo Lennartz as general manager of the company's functional chemicals business. Alan Kwek, presently manager of the powder coatings acitivities in Asia-Pacific, will in turn take over at polymer chemicals.

GEORGE ABD

CEO and president for Spartech, St. Louis, Missouri, US, has resigned for personal reasons. He has also stepped down as a director of the company. The resignations take effect immediately. Abd will continue to serve the company in an advisory capacity. A formal process has been initiated to identify a successor. In the interim, Randy Martin, chief financial officer of Spartech, will also serve as its CEO.

MICHAEL BELL

has been appointed by Thermo Fisher Scientific to the nominating and corporate governance committee of the board. He will be based in Waltham, Massachusetts, US.

CAMERON BERRY

has been appointed business ­director, soda ash, for Solvay Chemicals in Houston, Texas, US, where he is responsible for soda ash sales and marketing. Mr Berry joined Solvay Minerals in 1995 as a logistics analyst, and he most recently held the position of vice president, logistics for Solvay Chemicals.

BOB DALE

has been appointed as vice president of research and ­development (R&D) for Polymer Group in Charlotte, North Carolina, US, and will lead the company's R&D activities and customer-focused innovation strategies taking place worldwide. He was previously vice president of sales and marketing for US Nonwovens.

PHIL DEMBOWSKI

has been appointed greater China business director for Dow Corning - Advanced Technologies and Ventures Business (ATVB), based in China. Dembowski assumes his new duties from Jeroen Bloemhard, who remains ­global industry executive director of Dow Corning's electronics business and will move from China to Japan to focus on expanding the firm's position in the Japan electronics market. Meanwhile, Ken Seibert replaces Dembowski as global ­manager of the device fabrication materials group within ATVB's Electronics and Advanced Technologies unit.

SHARRANN SIMMONS

has joined Cognis Nutrition & Health as ­senior ­marketing manager, based in La Grange, Illinois, US. She is responsible for ­marketing strategy ­development and implementation for the entire Cognis ­portfolio of ­nutritional and food ingredients in North America. "Sharrann brings an outstanding set of skills and we are so fortunate to have her on our team," said Dave Eckert, vice president, Cognis Nutrition & Health.

FERNANDO ESPINOSA

has been named as senior vice president and general manager, Europe by US-based Polymer Group. In this role, Espinosa will bring more than 30 years of industry experience in PGI's fastest growing region of Latin America to the European region, with a focus on market leadership and growth.
