LONDON (ICIS news)--Dow Chemical and Solvay announced on Monday they have signed an agreement for a joint venture to build the world's largest hydrogen peroxide plant in Thailand.

The companies in a joint statement said they hoped to have the facility operational by 2010. No financial details were disclosed.

“The hydrogen peroxide plant will be the largest in the world, with a capacity of over 330,000 tonnes per annum of hydrogen peroxide at 100% concentration,” the companies said. “The hydrogen peroxide supplying the process is based on Solvay’s proprietary, high yield hydrogen peroxide technology.”

Meanwhile, Dow Chemical is also in talks with BASF about constructing a world-scale, 390,000 tonne/year propylene oxide facility in Map Ta Phut, Thailand.

The plant would utilise technology developed by both Dow and BASF to produce propylene oxide using feedstock hydrogen peroxide, the companies said.

Thailand was an attractive location for investment in hydrogen peroxide and propylene oxide production due to its fertile business climate and the easy access to the entire Asia-Pacific region, the president of Dow Polyurethanes said.

Propylene oxide is used in the production of propylene glycol, polyurethanes and glycol ethers.
