HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Sales volumes of US Huntsman’s methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) increased 4% for the three months ended 30 June as compared with same period last year, the company said on Tuesday.

Strong growth in Asia and Europe partially offset reduced demand in the Americas and drove the increase in sales volumes, the company said as part of its the release of its 2007 second-quarter results. Huntsman did not release tonnage or dollar amounts for MDI sales.

MDI average selling prices increased 7%, primarily in response to increased raw material costs, the company said.

“In our polyurethanes segment, we saw MDI sales volumes increase by 15% as compared to the first quarter, as demand, particularly in insulation applications, was strong in all global regions,” said Peter Huntsman, the company's president and chief executive.

However, Huntsman noted continued softness in most construction-related end markets in North America.

Benchmark bulk MDI prices stood at 133-140 cents/lb ($2,932-3,086/tonne) DEL (delivered), according to global chemical market service ICIS pricing.
