TOKYO (ICIS news)--Daiso reported a 39% increase in its first-quarter operating income due to favourable performance in the basic chemicals and performance chemicals segment, the company said on Friday.

Consolidated operating income in the three months ended 30 June was yen (Y) 1.1bn ($9.2m), up from Y816m a year ago.
Net sales rose 10.1% to Y19.3bn from 17.5bn, while net income was up 49.7% to Y687m from Y459m.
In the basic chemicals segment, sales increased due to price increases of epichlorohydrin and chlor-alkali as well as cost cuts.
In the performance chemicals segment, sales of such products as epichlorohydrin rubber and allyl ether and related products increased due to efforts to explore new markets and acquiring of new applications overseas.
Favourable performance was also supported by capacity increases of manufacturing facilities.
The company did not provide specific segment results.
