SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Sumitomo Chemical will shut its low density polyethylene (LDPE) unit at Chiba prefecture at the end of August for a turnaround, a company source said on Thursday.

The 170,000 tonne/year plant will be shut for around 50 days, in line with the turnaround of its PP plants, the source said.

There are no plans to turn around its 110,000 tonne/year linear LDPE (LLDPE) plant at the same site, a source at Japan’s petrochemical major said.

The shutdown will have little impact on regional supply as Japan is not a major LDPE exporter, traders said.

Japan exported around 126,000 tonnes of LDPE in the first half this year, about 7% more than the 118,000 tonnes exported in the same period last year, according to the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association.

Total LDPE production in the first six months this year was 925,000 tonnes, about 5% more than the 883,000 tonnes produced in the same period last year, the association data shows.
