TORONTO (ICIS news)--Hawaii-based energy technology firm Hoku Scientific has awarded engineering contracts for a 2,000 tonne/year polysilicon plant in Idaho, it said on Friday.

Contracts were awarded to Shaw Group’s Stone & Webster chemicals division and to JH Kelley, Hoku said.

Hoku officials were not immediately available for additional comment.

In a separate statement, Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based Shaw said the polysilicon project at Pocatello, Idaho, was worth $260m (€190m) and completion was scheduled for May 2009.

Hoku’s US-listed shares fell 5% to $9.93/share in Friday morning trading in New York after rising by over 10% on Thursday.

Germany's Wacker, the world's second-largest polysilicon maker, recently announced a €400m polysilicon expansion at its site in Burghausen.

Industry participants describe the global polysilicon market as very tight, driven by strong demand from semiconductor and solar applications.
