LONDON (ICIS news)--Abu Dhabi Polymers Co (Borouge) plans to develop a 50,000 tonne/year high performance polypropylene (PP) compounding facility in Shanghai to supply the automotive and electrical appliance industries, the United Arab Emirates-based company said on Tuesday.

The plant would serve customers such as Volkswagen, General Motors and Peugeot Citroen and take advantage of low-cost PP supply from Borouge’s Ruwais complex in Abu Dhabi.

Applications for the advanced PP would include dashboards and door panels, bumpers, as well as mineral filled PP and glass fibre reinforced PP for under-the-bonnet use.

Borouge or its part-owners Borealis were not immediately available to say when the plant was expected to start up.

Borouge is currently expanding its Ruwais complex, tripling its annual polyolefins capacity to 2m tonnes/year by 2010.

Borouge is a joint venture of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co and European polyolefins specialist Borealis.
