SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--China’s food safety reputation took another beating as Wal-Mart, a global retailer, issued late on Tuesday a recall for China-made pet food that were found tainted with melamine.

The US major has removed Chicken Jerky Strips made by Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co and Chicken Jerky manufactured by Shanghai Bestro Trading from its stores on 26 July, it said in a statement on its website.

“Since then, the product has remained off shelves while we have carried out 17 different tests to determine the cause of the small number of complaints we received,” Wal-Mart said.

“The latest advice from our testing laboratory shows trace levels of melamine. Because of the low levels that were found, our laboratory has recommended additional testing.”

China has revoked the business licences of Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development and Binzhou Futian Biology Technology which are accused of selling products tainted with melamine linked to pet deaths in the US.

China-made products are under global scrutiny after several recalls concerning anti-freeze in toothpastes and toys with high lead content and contained magnets. The Chinese government has formed a taskforce led by Vice Premier Wu Yi to tackle product quality and food safety problems.

A family sued Mattel on Monday, claiming the world’s largest toymaker should pay for testing to determine if children have been exposed to lead from millions of recalled toys, US media reported.
