LONDON (ICIS news)--Lucite is to shut down its methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant at Billingham, Teesside, in the UK for two to three weeks of maintenance in September, a company source said on Friday.

The 200,000 tonne/year plant had reportedly experienced production issues in July.

Another source close to the company said that a mechanical failure was to blame, but could not reveal any further information.

Buyers had reported that Lucite had asked them not to place orders for September on the basis of the outage. One buyer reported that its contract for September volumes would be honoured by the producer.

Buyers and sellers said on Friday that a shutdown at the plant, central to European supply, would mean a tighter market in September and the fourth quarter. No reaction had been seen on spot pricing or in the market in general.

Other producers of MMA in Europe include Degussa and Arkema.
