HOUSTON (ICIS news)--A Total joint venture has started production at its expanded ethane cracker in Messaied, Qatar, the company said on Tuesday.

Total formed Qatar Petrochemical (Qapco) with Industries Qatar, which owns an 80% stake in the joint venture. The value of the expansion is $230m (€168m ), Total said.

The expansion's ethylene capacity is 200,000 tonne/year, bringing the cracker's total to 720,000/year, the company said.

The cracker will feed Qapco's 400,000tonne/year low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant, Total said. The cracker would also provide ethylene for a proposed 250,00 tonne/year LDPE line, which could start operations after 2010.
