HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Groundwork has begun at a new Petrobras refinery site in Brazil, the state-run company said on Tuesday.

The planned Abreu e Lima refinery in the northeast state of Pernambuco will be the first new such facility in Brazil in 27 years, Petrobras said.

The new unit will use heavy oil lifted in Brazil and Venezuela with a processing capacity of 200,000 bbl/day of oil. All other refineries in Brazil use a blend of heavy and light crude. Brazil’s oil production is about 80% heavy crude, Petrobras said.

The refinery will focus on diesel production particularly aimed at supplying the increased demand for derivatives in the Northeast, Petrobras said.

"The refinery is expected to produce some 814,000 cubic meters of petrochemical naphtha, 322,000 tons of LPG, 8.8 million tons of diesel fuel, and 1.4 million tons of oil coke per year," the company said.

The project will cost a little over $4bn (€2.92), with production to begin in the second half of 2010, Petrobras said.
