SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--CNOOC & Shell Petrochemical Co (CSPC) is currently running its naphtha cracker at the Huizhou complex below full capacity following a power failure that occurred earlier in the week, a source close to the company said on Thursday.

“The problem at the cracker was caused by a power failure which occurred unexpectedly [on Monday]. The cracker is currently running at 95%,” the source said.

Officials at Shell, however, would not confirm what the cracker’s problem was.

The 800,000 tonne/year unit in Guangdong province was also scheduled for a maintenance shutdown on 12 September for 10 days, the source added.

It was not immediately known if the other downstream units were affected as well, following the incident.

China’s newest cracker complex is a joint venture between CNOOC and Anglo-Dutch major Shell Chemicals and started up at the end of January 2006.
