LONDON (ICIS news)--Oman Methanol’s new 1.05m tonne/year methanol unit in Sohar was now running up to at least 70% capacity, a Helm company source said on Friday.

Marketable product was likely to be available by the second half of September, the source said.

German chemical firm Helm holds the marketing rights to the majority of methanol produced at the plant and aims to become one of the top three sellers of methanol globally after the plant’s full start-up.

The additional supply from the plant should go some way to easing the current tightness in supply for prompt material in Europe.

The Methanex outages in Chile caused by natural gas constraints has led to a global shortage of methanol.

The Oman Methanol plant has three major shareholders: Methanol Holdings (Trinidad) with 50%; Oman’s Omar Zawawi Establishment with 30%; and, Germany's MAN Ferrostaal, with the remainder.
