SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Japan’s Mitsui Chemical is expected to start up its bisphenol-A (BPA) joint venture (JV) plant in Caojing, China, by next August, a company official said on Monday.
“The construction of the plant will be completed by [the] end [of] June 2008 and we will begin commercial production of BPA by August 2008,” he told ICIS news.
The 140,000 tonne/year plant – a 50:50 joint venture with Sinopec Corp – was originally scheduled to start up in early 2008 but this was later revised to August. No official reasons were given for the delay, although sources close to the company mentioned “administrative delays” caused by the Chinese authorities.
Phenol feedstock will be provided solely from Sinopec-linked Gaoqiao Petrochemical’s 200,000 tonne/year phenol-acetone plant. About 50% of the BPA produced would be sold to Teijin Chemicals’ 50,000 tonne/year polycarbonate plant located in
