Cellulosic ethanol still 10 years out – Unica

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The technology to bring cellulosic ethanol production into commercial viability is still about another 10 years away, the general secretary of Brazilian sugarcane association Unica said on Monday.

Much publicity has surrounded the additional production that cellulosic ethanol is anticipated to bring into markets, but “cellulosic is nothing serious right now”, said Fernando Moreira. He spoke at a meeting of the Brazil-Texas Chamber of Commerce.

Cellulosic feedstock roughage that remains after crushing out the juice for ethanol and sugar production is called bagasse when the ethanol is made from sugarcane.

Brazilian ethanol production currently takes about 50% of the sugarcane crop, with the other 50% going into sugar production, according to Unica.
