SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Siam Mitsui plans to keep its No1 450,000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) line at Mab Ta Phut, Thailand shut until the end of this month for regular maintenance, a company source said on Wednesday.

“To some extent, the shutdown was also a reaction to poor sales overall this year, but maintenance was necessary anyway,” the source said, adding that the unit was taken offline last week.

Siam Mitsui, southeast Asia’s largest PTA producer, would also keep to its earlier-announced schedule to shut its No3 500,000 tonne/year line at the same Mab Ta Phut site in November for two weeks, he said.

The company operates a third PTA facility line at the site, with a nameplate capacity of 450,000 tonnes/year. There is currently no planned shutdown for this unit.

Siam Mitsui is a joint venture between Japanese chemical giant Mitsui Chemicals and Thai conglomerate Siam Cement.
