SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--KP Chemical has shut down its No 3 650,000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) line in South Korea for a 10-day turnaround, a company source said on Friday.

The company also plans to take its No 1 and No 2 units offline in October, a company source added.

“The No 3 line was shut on 9 September for regular maintenance,” said the source, who added that the No 2 350,000 tonne/year unit would be shut from 10-20 October, also for maintenance.

The No 1 250,000 tonne/year line would be taken offline in early October for about 10 days to carry out some restructuring works, including lifting its purified isophthalic acid capacity.

This unit is a terephthalic-isophthalic acid swing line.

“After the October shutdown, the No 1 unit would produce isophthalic acid only for next one-to-two months at least,” said the source.

The source was unable to say to say how much more isophthalic acid would be produced at the No 1 unit after the October shutdown.

KP is one of the largest producers of PTA in Korea. It is also looking to build a new PTA plant in China, and was last heard to be in talks with Chinese polyester Tongkun Group to jointly develop such a project.
