SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Sasol, the South African chemical producer, has delayed the start-up of its fatty alcohol joint venture in China with palm oil major Wilmar till the end of the year, a Sasol official said on Friday.

The 60,000 tonne/year plant at Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, was originally scheduled to come on stream in the third quarter, the source said.

"The delay is associated with construction and equipment fabrication delays that have been associated with other chemical projects in the region," the official said, adding that commercial quantities would be available only in the first quarter of 2008.

The delay would exacerbate the tightness in the Asian fatty alcohol supply until mid-2008, he said.

Other fatty alcohol majors in the region include Proctor & Gamble, Ecogreen Oleochemicals, VVF and Kao Corp.
