LONDON (ICIS news)--Sasol will open an office in Shanghai to market solvents in China, the South African oil to chemicals group said on Wednesday.

Sasol Chemicals Shanghai Co Ltd (SCS) will initially market products from the global Sasol solvents business which operates plants in South Africa and Germany.

“The Chinese market is extensive and forms part of our vigorous pursuit of global growth opportunities in the chemicals sector,” group general manager for the Sasol chemicals business, Reiner Groh, said.

“We believe that we can offer a significant value proposition to the Chinese chemical markets,” he added.

Sasol said in April it would double its methyl iso-butyl ketone (MIBK) solvent output at Sasolburg near Johannesburg to about 60,000 tonnes/year with the construction of a new plant.

The plant is expected to come on stream in the first half of 2009.
