TOKYO (ICIS news)--Japan’s Toray Industries and Toray Engineering Co (TEK) have signed a contract with Indian fibres maker SRF Ltd to provide it with a polyester filament plant, a spokeswoman from Toray Industries said on Tuesday.

Under the contract, Toray and TEK would provide materials for construction of the 15,000 tonne/year polyester filament facility, which would be built by SRF in New Delhi, the spokeswoman, who declined to be named, added.

No financial details were provided regarding the contract, which was signed on 10 September and would run for about 10 years.

Toray and TEK were scheduled to complete the handover of the plant to SRF in spring 2009, the companies said in a statement.

With India's increasing  purchase of cars, demand for polyester cord for tyres was expanding, SRF said, explaining the need for the new plant.

At the same time, due to the development of various industries in India, domestic demand for conveyor belts that used polyester was also increasing, it added.
