HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Employment in the US chemicals sector fell by 0.3% in September from August, while employment in plastics and rubber products fell 2%, the US Labor Department reported on Friday.

The number of employees in the chemicals sector fell to 874,800 in September from 875,100 in August, the department reported.

However, there were 4,600 more employees in the chemicals sector in September than there were in the same month in 2006, which represented a 0.5% increase.

The number of employees in the plastics and rubber products industries fell to 785,2000 in September from 787,200 in August. In comparison, plastics and rubber products employees in September 2006 numbered 798,000, the Labor Department reported.

Overall employment increased in September with 110,000 net new jobs after an 89,000 increase in August, the Labor Department said, reflecting gains in the government sector and service industries.

However, overall employment trended down in manufacturing and construction, the department said.
