TORONTO (ICIS news)--Industrial gases major Air Products and partner Konarka have won a $4.7m (€3.3m) award from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology to jointly research and develop transparent, flexible solar modules for windows and other building applications, Air Products said on Tuesday.

Konarka, based in Lowell, Massachusetts, is a company focused on polymer photovoltaic technology that converts light into energy, Air Products said.

The modules Air Products and Konarka will work on would help control the transparency of windows to protect privacy but could also be integrated into applications such as building sensors, battery chargers lighting and displays, and wireless security monitoring systems.

As part of the project, Air Products would develop high-conductivity polymers that improve the performance of organic photovoltaic cells, it said.
