HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Dow Chemical has agreed to start negotiating a plan with regulators to clean up a site polluted with dioxins and furans near its plant in Midland, Michigan, the company said on Friday.
Dow has until 10 December to develop the plan, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The deadline could be extended to 9 January, the agency said.
The polluted area begins upstream of the Dow plant near the Tittabawassee River, the EPA said. It could also include areas downstream to the Saginaw River, its floodplains and portions of Saginaw Bay in Lake Huron.
The contamination had been traced back to manufacturing processes Dow discontinued before World War I, Dow said. For the latest chemical news, data and analysis that directly impacts your business sign up for a free trial to ICIS news - the breaking online news service for the global chemical industry.
