HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Brazil and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) plan to sign an agreement on biofuels cooperation, according to Brazilian state media on Monday.
“The Brazilian government considers Africa the new frontier for biofuels,” said Brazilian diplomat Roberto Jaguaribe, the undersecretary general for Political Affairs at the Foreign Ministry.
Jaguaribe commented that Africa is well-positioned to produce biodiesel because of its available land, climate and labour pool.
The announcement was made during an official state visit to Burkina Faso by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva which began on Monday.
Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of ethanol and itself has undertaken a determined government policy to expand biodiesel production.
UEMOA is a customs union of West African states.
