HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Brazilian thermoplastic resins production dropped 4.3% in September compared with August, reaching a total of 393,700 tonnes according to national trade industry association Abiquim on Monday.
Domestic sales dropped 12.9% in September compared with August, reaching 289,400 tonnes, while exports also dropped 3.9% compared with the previous month, reaching a total of 85,500 tonnes.
Abiquim’s resins coordinator Jose Ricardo Roriz Coelho held the group’s previous estimate of 8% growth this year compared with 2006, stating that the drop in production was influenced by unusually strong results in August.
“In the fourth quarter, the demand for resins normally picks up. There are various sectors, such as automobiles, consumer goods, and construction, which are large resins consumers and they are increasing the rhythm of activity,” the Abiquim executive said in a Portuguese-language statement.
From January through September production of resins in
Domestic sales, which reflect strong demand, grew 6% year-to-date through September, compared with the same period of 2006, reaching 2.5m tonnes.
These data are preliminary and do not include statistics for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Abiquim said.
The resins covered include low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), high density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA).
