HOUSTON (ICIS news)--A joint venture created by a Celanese subsidiary and a Japanese firm has expanded a plant in Wilmington, North Carolina, that makes linear polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), the company said on Tuesday.

The plant can now produce 15,000 tonnes/year, double its capacity in 2004, according to Fortron Industries, a joint venture created by Kureha and Ticona Engineering Polymers, a subsidiary of Celanese.

The expansion makes the Fortron plant the world's largest for PPS, the company said.

PPS is used in automobiles, electrical equipment, aircraft and other industrial uses.
