China to post restrictions on new vinyl projects

SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--China will post restrictions on new polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and caustic soda projects from 1 December 2007 for environmental reasons, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said on Wednesday.

For more efficient economics, the capacity of any new PVC or caustic soda facility should not be less than 300,000 tonnes/year, it said in a statement.   

Ethylene-based PVC projects will also be given preference over carbide-based ones, it added.

In addition, to better protect the environment, new carbide-based PVC and related caustic soda projects will be forbidden in eastern China and alongside natural resorts, main rivers, roads and railways, the NDRC said.
