HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The federal government has started a criminal investigation into an oil spill in the San Francisco Bay, according to media reports published on Monday.

About 58,000 gal (220,000 litres) of bunker fuel spilled into the bay after the Cosco Busan container ship hit one of the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge on 7 November, the US Coast Guard said.

Federal investigators were questioning crew members on board the ship, the Associated Press (AP) reported. The National Transportation Safety Board has also started an investigation, the AP reported.

Following the spill, the environmental group Friends of the Earth started a petition that calls for Congress to require a phase-out of bunker fuel, the group said on its Web site.
