HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Green Earth Fuels hosted the opening of its 90m gal/year Texas biodiesel plant at Galena Park, company representatives said on Thursday.

Green Earth Fuels recognised the severity of challenges currently being faced by the US biodiesel industry due to high feedstock costs, citing expectations that soybean oil prices would continue to rise and dash early profitability, a company official said.

“We’re well positioned logistically and well funded,” a spokesperson said.

The Green Earth plant is within the Galena Park Liquids Terminal, a coastal shipping complex south of Houston that is owned by Kinder Morgan Energy Partners.

The company said it intends to produce high quality biodiesel, with plans to explore uses for co-product glycerine as well.
