TORONTO (ICIS news)--Associated British Foods (ABF) said on Thursday its 51% owned subsidiary Illovo Sugar would invest in a £100m ($206m) combined sugar mill-ethanol-electricity project in Mali.

The ethanol plant would have a capacity of 15m litre/year while the mill would produce some 200,000 tonnes/year of sugar, ABF said.

The combined complex would require some 1.5m tonnes/year of sugar cane feedstock.

Sugar production was expected to begin in December 2009 with full capacity to be reached in 2011, said ABF.

South Africa-based Illovo – described as Africa’s largest sugar producer - will hold a 70% stake in the project with the remainder held by Mali's government and private investors, it added.
