NEW DELHI (ICIS news)--India needs to import a minimum of 3.5m tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer to 2011 in order to meet projected demand, according to an industry representative on Thursday.

Overall consumption of phosphate fertilizer was forecast to grow by 6.5% by 2011 over the annual 2004-2006 average, added Luc M Maene, director general of the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA), who was speaking here on Thursday at the Fertilizer Association of India (FAI) conference.

Indian DAP imports had expanded six-fold over 2004-2006, since when the country had become the world’s largest DAP importer, Maene said, adding this trend looked set to continue to meet forecast demand.

However, there would be no significant change in DAP domestic production, he said.

India had managed to produce an average of 5m tonnes/year of DAP since 2004, while DAP consumption had ranged between 5.7-7.8m tonnes over the same period.

The annual FAI conference takes place in Delhi from the 5-7 December.
