EC agrees to increase Slovakia's CO2 allowance

PARIS (ICIS news)--Slovakia can produce more carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions under its National Allocation Plan (NAP) for 2008-2012 than previously agreed, said the European Commission (EC) on Friday.

 

The cleared annual allocation for Slovakia for phase II of the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is now 32.6 million CO2 allowances, after the EC gave the green light to a partial increase of 1.7 million allowances.

  

Slovakia - along with Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg and Sweden - proposed amendments to its NAP after the commission finished assessing them in November 2006.

 

Slovakia proposed allocating nearly 4 million allowances more than originally stated, arguing that some new nuclear capacity would not be operational before the end of 2012.
